The Irreplaceable Power of a Human Voice
By Katashi Nishida

Letters hold a warmth that only ink on paper can carry.
Photographs freeze a single moment and refuse to let it go.
Films move us in ways that still images never could, and even without a single spoken line, silent films have made people weep.
An actor with no lines to speak, no music to lean on, could still make a stranger cry using nothing but an expression and a gesture.
No dialogue was needed.
Being human in front of a camera was enough.
But there is something else that reaches us just as deeply, and we rarely stop to notice it.
The human voice.
We hear it constantly.
A parent calling us in from another room.
A friend laughing on the phone.
A stranger's voice over a train station speaker.
A song on the radio.
Without trying, without even meaning to, we memorize these voices. They settle into us the way nothing else quite does.
A voice belongs to exactly one person.
It is not something we are simply born with and keep unchanged.
It is built, slowly, by everything we live through. This is why, sometimes, we sense who someone is before we ever learn their name.
In my own work and in ordinary daily life, I have noticed this again and again. A few minutes into a conversation, before any real introduction has happened, something already tells me who I am speaking with.
A warmth.
A steadiness.
A quality I cannot name but somehow recognize.
I still cannot fully explain why a voice can feel so calming, so familiar, so reassuring—almost the way a singer's voice can move a listener for reasons that have nothing to do with the lyrics.
A voice is a person's identity made audible.
That is why no two voices are ever alike, even when they say the exact same words.
Faces change with age.
Handwriting shifts over the years.
Photographs fade.
But a voice keeps something none of those can hold onto so completely: the life that shaped it.
Its joys.
Its doubts.
Its kindness.
Its strength.
We hear a person's whole history in the way they speak, often without realizing we are hearing it at all.
Take two words:
“Thank you.”
Written down, they can be read a dozen different ways.
Distant.
Cold.
Even sarcastic.
But spoken aloud, everything shifts. There is a small pause before the words come.
A breath.
A slight catch in the voice.
Sometimes a smile you can hear.
Sometimes tears.
A voice tells you what the words alone cannot.
Of course, a voice cannot reach every person.
Some cannot see.
Some cannot hear.
Some cannot speak.
Some cannot read.
Each of us takes in the world differently, and that is precisely why words, images, and voices all matter, each in their own irreplaceable way.
This is why This Is Earth was never meant to be only about video. Not only about photographs.
Not only about voices.
It exists to hold onto something larger than any one of these: the plain, unrepeatable fact that a person lived, right here, in this exact moment in time.
Their laughter.
Their half-formed thoughts.
The times they searched for the right words, and the times they chose to say nothing at all.
I hope every one of those moments finds its way to the future. That is why I want to preserve the human voice. Nothing else in the world sounds like a life.
A photograph shows how you looked.
A voice remembers how you lived.
だからThis Is Earthは、
