This Story Is Yours

Founder of This Is Earth

As I began building this project, I found myself facing a question I could not easily answer.
Who is this really for?
The answer only came when I realized I had been asking the wrong question.
At first, I approached it the way most people would.
I thought about parents.
People approaching a new chapter in life.
Those facing a significant transition.
People who wanted to leave something meaningful behind for the people they loved.
When a new service launches, the answer is usually a profile.
An age group.
A profession.
A kind of person going through a specific challenge.
The message that follows is familiar:
"Does this sound like you?"
There is nothing wrong with that approach.
I have used it myself.
But the more time I spent with this project, the more that framing felt like it was missing something essential.
Because I do not believe this project is for a particular type of person.
I believe it is for particular moments in a life. And those moments,
I have come to understand, have a way of arriving for almost everyone.
Some people spend years thinking before they sit down to record something.
Others act within a day when a feeling surfaces, something shifts, and suddenly there are words they need to leave somewhere safe.
Both of those people are exactly who this is for.
Life contains moments we plan for, and moments that arrive without warning.
A thought appears.
A feeling becomes clear.
Someone realizes there are words they have been meaning to say to a person they love and that they may not say them otherwise.
That is why I stopped trying to define this project around any specific group.
Instead, I began thinking about the kinds of moments that bring people here.
Some moments arrive carrying words we never quite found the courage to speak.
The gratitude held quietly for years.
Feelings we always meant to share someday but somehow never did.
Others come at the edge of a major change: a marriage, the birth of a child, a move to another country, or the beginning of something difficult.
There are also the smaller moments: an ordinary afternoon, the sound of a familiar voice, the age a child will never be again, and the everyday things we assume will always be there until suddenly they are not.
And sometimes the moment is simply personal.
A desire to speak honestly about who we are.
The experiences that shaped us.
The things that matter to us.
Not for anyone else.
But for ourselves.
What I find meaningful about each of these is that none of them requires a particular kind of life to arrive. They come for people at every age and in every circumstance.
The young parent.
The person growing older.
Someone standing at the edge of a major change. Someone sitting quietly in an unremarkable afternoon, suddenly aware that time is moving.
In those moments of transition, what matters is not only what happened. It is what we were thinking while it happened.
What we felt.
What we hoped.
What we feared.
A record of those thoughts can become something unexpected.
Not a document of events, but a portrait of a person at a particular point in their life.
Something a future version of ourselves, or someone who loves us, might one day be deeply grateful for.
There are also moments when we want to carry something forward.
Family stories that might otherwise fade.
The wisdom of one generation reaching toward the next.
Cultural memories that live in people before they live anywhere else.
These too deserve a place to be kept.
At some point, many of us look back and wish we had preserved who we were then. This project exists because of that wish. And because it does not have to come too late.
I stopped asking who this project was for when I realized the question itself was too narrow.
The right question was never who.
It was when.
And the answer, I have found, is that almost any point in a life when something in you quietly says:
"I want to preserve this."
"I want to leave something behind."
For your future family.
For your future self.
For someone you have not yet met.
This project does not exist for a particular type of person.
It exists for anyone who is living a life.
